Putting a hot tool down

Almost every heated styling tool has to be put down while it is still hot. Six of the ones we cover ship a bag or a case; exactly one ships a mat.

While it is hot

On a mat, on a stand, or on nothing at all — but never on a surface you care about. Curling tongs and the five-in-one sets usually have integrated stands and say so; straighteners mostly do not.

The one that comes with a mat

The BaByliss ST393E supplies a heat protection mat, and it is the only tool across our whole catalog that does; the Remington S3500 and S8540 ship none.

In a bag, in a case, or in a drawer

Six heated tools here publish something to put the tool in, and the distinction between them matters more than the count.

A hard shell is the one that protects a warm tool and a cable: Arkam’s 12-level straightener at $29 publishes one, and it is alone in that on this shelf. A soft travel bag comes with the Arkam three-level at $21, the FEBOTE at $26, the oudim air styler at $47 and the Beurer. The Shark publishes a storage case.

A case matters most for tools that travel with attachments — an air styler with five heads, a five-in-one curling set — because five heads without a case become three heads.

What will not help is the travel cases shelf on this site: both items there are made for a clipper and a OneBlade, and neither takes a styling barrel. For a heated tool, the bag that came in the box is the one you have.

When it has cooled

Loosely coiled cable, not wrapped around the barrel. The failure point on every heated tool is where the cable meets the handle, and tight wrapping puts the whole bend there.

Auto shut-off is not storage

The Remington straighteners here shut off after sixty minutes, and the Arkam three-level after thirty. That is a safety feature, not permission to walk away from a hot barrel on a worktop.

What people ask about this

Do I need a heat mat?

If your tool did not come with one and has no stand, yes — it is the difference between a worktop with a mark on it and one without. The BaByliss [ST393E](/reviews/babyliss-st393e/) is the only tool in the whole catalog that supplies one, which tells you how rarely makers include it.

Is a travel bag the same as a case?

Not for a tool that is still warm. A soft bag stores a cold tool and protects a worktop from nothing; a hard shell stops the barrel being knocked and the cable being crushed. The [Arkam](/reviews/straighteners-arkam/) at $29 is the one straightener here that publishes a hard shell rather than a bag.

Can I wrap the cable around the tool?

Not while it is hot, and not tightly when it is cold. The strands break where the cable enters the handle, and wrapping concentrates the bend at exactly that point.
