Braun states it adapts the trimmer to beard density, with a PowerBoost mode for the densest beards, to keep the cut even where a fixed-speed machine would slow down.
The problem it addresses is real and familiar: a trimmer that slows in a thick patch leaves that patch longer than the rest, and the unevenness only shows afterwards.
Braun fits AutoSense to its Series 9 trimmer and its Series 7 all-in-one kit on this site. Philips uses BeardSense on its Multigroom 7000, stating that it scans beard density 125 times a second. Panasonic uses a beard density sensor on two shavers here.
All three publish the mechanism; none publishes a measurement of the result.
Whether it matters depends on your beard. On a fine, even stubble a fixed-speed trimmer behaves the same everywhere; on a dense or uneven one, this is what the higher tiers are sold on.
