Panasonic ES-ALT4B review

Three Japanese stainless blades ground at 30 degrees, a linear motor running 39,000 cutting actions a minute, a beard density sensor, a head flexing in eight directions, plus a shaving-foam mode, a travel lock and a three-minute quick charge.

Where it leaves us A linear motor and a density sensor at mid price, with the battery left unpublished.

Three Japanese stainless blades ground at thirty degrees, driven by a linear motor Panasonic rates at 39,000 cutting actions a minute. The head flexes in eight directions and a beard sensor adapts to density and contour.

The extras are the kind that get used: a pop-up long-hair trimmer with a 45-degree blade for the pass before the shave, a shaving foam mode, a travel lock, and a three-minute quick charge.

What is missing is the battery. Neither runtime nor full charge time appears in the listing, so both fields are empty here — and that is the one specification a shaver at this price should not leave out.

Two blanks on one page is what has to be weighed. Besides the battery, there is no live offer on amazon.com for this reference either, so the price line stays empty as well. Each of the three other foil shavers here gives at least one battery figure: fifty-four minutes on the ES-RT37, an hour to charge on the ES-LV67, forty-five minutes on the Braun. What this one does publish is the part Panasonic builds the range on — 39,000 cutting actions a minute, blades ground at thirty degrees, eight directions of flex. For anyone choosing between the two linear-motor models, that 39,000 is the figure to set against the ES-LV67’s 70,000; the ES-RT37 has no linear motor at all. All four are on the foil shavers shelf, and what a travel lock does explains the lock.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • A linear motor at this price: the same motor family as the Panasonic ER-DGP84 professional clipper, and what stops a shaver bogging down
  • A beard density sensor, which the cheaper Panasonic ES-RT37 does not have
  • A travel lock — the feature that stops a shaver running flat in a suitcase
  • No live offer on amazon.com at the time of writing

Compromises

  • Panasonic publishes no runtime and no full charge time for this model, only the three-minute quick charge

What people ask about this

What does a beard density sensor do?

Panasonic states it adapts to facial contours and to the thickness and density of the stubble, to minimize irritation and give an even shave. It is the same idea as AutoSense on the Braun beard trimmers: keep the cutting constant where a fixed-speed machine would slow.

What is a shaving foam mode?

A setting intended for shaving with foam or gel rather than dry. Panasonic lists it as a mode on this model. Whether to shave wet or dry is a preference; what matters here is that the manufacturer states the shaver is built for both.
