Philips NT5650/16 review

A nose, ear and eyebrow trimmer with a double-sided cutting element, a guard system Philips states trims without pulling, a body that washes completely, and three comb attachments plus a detail trimmer.

Where it leaves us Fully washable, with combs and a detail trimmer for eyebrows, at the top of the price range on this shelf.

A double-sided cutting element behind PrecisionTrim, which Philips states trims without pulling or plucking. The head is fully washable — on a family that clogs faster than any other on this site, that is the specification that decides whether the tool survives its first year.

Three comb attachments and a separate detail trimmer widen the job to eyebrows and facial edges, and a storage pouch is included.

It runs on a single AA cell, supplied. Philips does not say how many sessions a battery lasts; but a cell you can replace anywhere is more an advantage than a gap on a device used for a few minutes a week.

The price is what has to be weighed here, because this shelf is crowded. Twelve nose and ear trimmers are published on this site, and ten of them cost $40 or less; the cheapest is $10. At $68 this is the dearest of the twelve. What the money buys over the $22 Norelco is the washable head, three comb attachments and a separate detail trimmer — not a cutting figure, because not one of the twelve publishes one. On a shelf with no measurable performance to compare, what is left is the contents of the box and whether the head survives cleaning. The Braun EN21 and the Panasonic ER-GN300 are the other two European references on the nose and ear trimmers shelf, and AA battery or rechargeable compares the two power sources.

What people ask about this

Battery or rechargeable — which is better here?

They fail differently. A rechargeable cell eventually stops holding charge and takes the tool with it; an AA is replaced in ten seconds anywhere in the world. On a device used for a few minutes a week, the AA is the more practical of the two, and Philips supplies one.

Does "fully washable" include the motor housing?

Philips states the trimmer is fully washable for easy cleaning. That is the manufacturer's own wording for this model, quoted as such. The manual for your unit is the authority on which parts go under the tap and how they are dried.
