Remington D3198 review

2200 watts, three heat settings and two fan speeds on separate controls, a cold shot, a ceramic-ionic grille, and both a styling nozzle and a diffuser in the box.

Where it leaves us Separate controls, both attachments, and a short published specification to set against the others here.

Two thousand two hundred watts, three heat settings and two fan speeds on separate controls, plus a cold shot. A ceramic-ionic grille that Remington states distributes heat evenly and reduces static, a removable filter, and a hanging loop.

Separate controls are the reason this dryer belongs in the group rather than another at the same price. It is the one design decision that changes what a dryer can do, and it costs nothing to check: two switches on the handle rather than one.

Both attachments are supplied — the styling nozzle and the diffuser — which is worth more than it sounds, since original attachments are shaped for their own outlet; a universal diffuser exists, but it clamps on rather than clicking in. What is not published is the airflow, so that field is left empty here rather than filled from the wattage.

One note on price: this reference carries no live offer on amazon.com at the time of writing, and neither does any of the other three dryers on this shelf. The figure above appears when an offer does. The Grundig HD 6080 B, Remington AC9140B and Philips BHD510 are the other three on the hair dryers shelf, and looking after a hair dryer covers the filter.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • Heat and speed are on separate controls — the combination most people want, high airflow at low heat, is only possible that way
  • A diffuser and a nozzle are both in the box, both shaped for its air outlet
  • A removable filter that comes out for cleaning

Compromises

  • Remington publishes no airflow figure for this model, only the wattage

What people ask about this

Why do separate heat and speed controls matter?

Because a dryer with one combined dial cannot give you fast airflow at a low temperature. That is the setting most often wanted — it dries quickly without the heat — and no amount of wattage substitutes for it. Two controls is a design decision, and it is visible on the handle before you buy.

Is 2200 W the number that dries hair?

It is the number on the box. Airflow is the one that dries hair, and it is not published for this model. Wattage and airflow are related but not the same: a more efficient motor can move more air at lower stated power. Where a manufacturer publishes an airflow figure, this site reports it; here, Remington does not.
