Are the colours a gimmick?

No — they are the fastest way to find the right comb, and they survive what printed numbers do not. A guard whose size has rubbed off is a guard you stop trusting, and that is the ordinary end of a printed set.

Can these blend a fade?

Not on their own. From #2 upward the steps are 3 mm apart, and a blend needs increments finer than that — which is what a taper lever on the clipper, or a set with half sizes, provides. This set covers lengths; it does not cover the transitions between them.

Two things make this set worth its own page. The first is that the lengths are published individually rather than as a range — you know exactly what you are getting at each number. The second is the colour coding, which sounds cosmetic and is not: it is what still tells you the size after two years of use.

The limit is the step. Three millimetres between consecutive combs covers lengths but does not blend between them; for that, the clipper needs a lever, or you need half sizes.
