Cutting your own hair with clippers

A home cut goes wrong in two predictable places: the direction of the pass, and the transition between two guard lengths.

Before the machine is switched on

Dry hair, cape on, and the guards laid out in order. Cut dry: wet hair lies flatter under a guard and springs back as it dries, so the length you set is not the length you end up with. Every guard figure on every box assumes dry hair.

Start longer than you want

Fit a guard one size longer than the length you are aiming for. Taking more off is thirty seconds; putting it back is a week to ten days.

The direction of the pass

Move against the direction of growth. Working with the grain lays the hair flat and the blade skims over it, which is the most common cause of an uneven result and of a second pass cutting far more than the first.

The transition

This is where a home cut is won or lost, and the guard set is working against you. Two guard lengths meeting produce a visible line, and guard numbers are eighths of an inch — so on any standard set, including the Wahl eight at $45, every step is the same eighth and there is nothing finer to reach for. “Buy smaller steps” is not an option that exists.

Two things bridge it. A taper lever on the machine opens the blade a fraction without changing the guard, and it is the easy answer — but none of the four hair clippers on this site publishes one, so check your own machine rather than assuming. Failing that, clipper over comb: hold the hair out on a cutting comb at $30 and cut along the comb instead of the head, which gives you every length between the two guards rather than a choice of two.

The neckline last

Guards off, and only the outline. It is the part everyone sees and the part that cannot be undone — so it is the part to do when your hand is warmed up and the rest is already right.

What people ask about this

Which direction do I move the clipper?

Against the direction the hair grows. Moving with it lays the hair down and the blade passes over the top of it, which is why a second pass over the same area takes off more than the first did.

How do I do the back of my head?

With a second mirror, or with someone else. There is no technique that removes the need to see what you are cutting — and to be plain about it, the two [grooming mirrors](/grooming-mirrors/) on this site are 1× and 30× shaving mirrors rather than back-view mirrors. The FUNTOUCH's extending 360-degree arm is the nearest thing here; a plain hand mirror held up to the bathroom one does the job better.

How long does a mistake take to grow out?

One guard step is an eighth of an inch, and scalp hair grows roughly half an inch a month, so a step taken off by mistake is about a week to ten days. That is the whole reason to start one size longer than you want.
