Braun AIO3545 review

Braun's entry all-in-one: eight pieces for beard and hair, fourteen length settings between 3 and 21 mm (0.83 in), fifty minutes of cordless runtime, and a washable trimmer attachment with a case.

Where it leaves us A sound cheap kit with one real limit: it does not go below 3 mm (0.12 in).

Eight pieces, fourteen length settings between 3 and 21 mm (0.83 in), and fifty minutes of cordless runtime. Braun describes the blade as ultra-sharp and the trimmer attachment as washable, with a cleaning brush and a pouch in the box.

The limit is at the short end. Three millimeters is the shortest length this kit reaches, which covers a trimmed beard and a hair cut but not a stubble. If the look you keep is a two- or three-day growth, this is the wrong kit and the Series 7 below — or a dedicated trimmer — is the right one.

Everything else here is what an entry kit should be: the figures are published, the parts wash, and there is somewhere to put them.

Which leaves one comparison worth making before ordering, because all four multigroomers on this shelf publish a price. The Philips MG3946 costs $59 against $100 here, and its range starts at 0.5 mm (0.02 in) rather than 3 mm (0.12 in). It is shorter at the short end and cheaper at the till. On this shelf of four, this is the only kit that a cheaper one beats on range as well as on price — which is why it scores lowest of the four despite having nothing wrong with it. Eight pieces, fifty minutes and a washable attachment are what the hundred dollars buys; the span is not.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • The cheaper of the two Braun all-in-ones here, from a brand that publishes its figures
  • A washable attachment and a brush are both in the box
  • Fourteen settings between 3 and 21 mm (0.83 in) covers beard and hair without swapping heads
  • A storage pouch is supplied, which is what stops an eight-piece kit becoming seven pieces

Compromises

  • The range starts at 3 mm (0.12 in): nothing shorter, so a close stubble is out of reach
  • Fifty minutes, the shortest runtime of the kits here that publish one (90 and 120 min on the MG3946 and AIO7565)

What people ask about this

Why does the range starting at 3 mm (0.12 in) matter?

Because the settings below 3 mm (0.12 in) are the ones a stubble is held at. A kit that starts there can trim a beard and cut hair, but it cannot hold a two-day look — for that you need a trimmer whose range starts below one millimeter, or a shaver.

Eight pieces — how many are attachments that do different things?

Braun lists the set as covering beard trimming and hair cutting, with comb attachments, a cleaning brush and a pouch counted in the eight. The number on the box counts everything in it, including the brush and the bag. Compare kits on the jobs covered, not on the count.

Our score
