The best all-in-one grooming kit

A kit is sold on its piece count and lived with on three attachments. What matters is whether those pieces do different jobs, and whether the range reaches the stubble lengths people actually keep.

Where the range starts decides everything

A kit that begins at 3 mm (0.12 in) can trim a beard and cut hair, but it cannot hold a two-day stubble.

The Philips MG3946 is first for that reason: nine attachments covering beard, hair, nose and ear and body, twelve lengths from 0.5 to 12 mm (0.02 to 0.47 in), an adjustable comb sweeping 3 to 7 mm (0.12 to 0.28 in) without a change of head, and blades Philips states never need oiling. Ninety minutes of runtime.

The Braun alternative, with one real limit

The Braun AIO3545 is well made and well documented — fourteen settings, a washable attachment, a pouch — but its range starts at 3 mm (0.12 in). If your beard lives below that, this is the wrong kit whatever else it does.

The complete one

The Braun AIO7565 reaches 0.1 mm (0.004 in), works in the shower on a body stated 100% waterproof with an AquaGrip handle, and brings down the ProBlade and AutoSense from Braun’s flagship trimmer. Thirteen pieces across five jobs, and 120 minutes of runtime.

What we would not do

We would not buy the 19-piece kit expecting to know what is in it. Philips names six attachments on that listing and then writes “and more”.

Which clipper suits your cut?

You want one tool for face, head and body
That is the format's promise, and the attachments are what you are really buying.
You mainly do one thing well
A dedicated tool for that job usually does it better, and a kit's extra heads go unused.
You travel often
A kit replaces several tools in a bag, which is its most concrete advantage.
You want body grooming included
Check that the body head has rounded tips and a wet rating: not every kit provides both.

Picking by the cut you want

Beard and stubble

The core of most kits, and usually the head that is genuinely good.

Head clipping

A larger head and longer guards. Whether it is comfortable over a whole scalp depends on head width, not on the number of guards.

Body grooming

Only worth using if the kit includes a proper body head. A face head on the body is the common shortcut and the common cause of nicks.

Detail work

Nose, ears and edges. These small heads are what make a kit feel complete.

The details that decide the result

Which heads are genuinely good
A kit is judged on its two most-used heads, not on the count. A box of ten with one usable trimmer is a poor kit.
Guard range and steps
A kit spanning face, head and body needs guards across a wide range. Large jumps between lengths limit what it can actually do.
Wet rating
Essential if body grooming is part of the intended use, and it is not a given on kits.
Head changeover
Heads are swapped mid-session. A stiff or unclear fitting is a daily annoyance and can leave a head half-seated.
Availability of replacement heads
Heads are consumables. A kit whose heads cannot be replaced separately becomes disposable when one wears out.

The mistakes we see

Judging a kit by the number of attachments
Most owners use two heads. A long list is a marketing figure, and a kit with one excellent trimmer beats a box of mediocre ones.
Using the face head on the body
Face trimmer heads are not shaped for curved, sensitive skin. It is the shortcut that produces nicks.
Not checking head availability
The heads wear out before the motor does. A kit with no replacements available is a tool with an end date.
Assuming the whole kit is washable
Often some heads are and others are not. Rinsing the wrong one is a quick way to end it.

By who is being groomed

The one who grooms everywhere
A kit is genuinely the right format, provided its body head is a real one.
The beard only
A dedicated trimmer will do it better and take less space.
The traveler
One case, one charger, several jobs. That is the clearest argument for the format.

Blades, oiling and working life

A kit has more parts to clean and more places for hair to collect. The heads that get neglected are the ones used least, and they are the ones that corrode or seize between uses.

  • Clean each head after use, not only the one used most.
  • Check which heads are washable; do not rinse those that are not.
  • Dry every part fully before returning it to the case.
  • Oil the blades the maker specifies, and replace heads when they pull.

Safety

Several blade types, each intended for a different area.

  • Use each head for its intended area: face heads on the body cause nicks.
  • Check the head is fully seated before switching on; a half-fitted head can come loose.
  • Only use in the shower if the tool is explicitly rated for wet use.
  • Inspect blades and guards for damage before use.

What people ask about this

Does the piece count mean anything?

Only if the pieces do different jobs. Count the jobs — beard, hair, nose and ear, body, detailing — rather than the objects, because the number on the box includes the brush and the bag.

Which kit reaches the shortest length?

The Braun AIO7565, at 0.1 mm (0.004 in) with its precision head. That is effectively bare skin, and it is the shortest setting of the four kits here.

Is a kit as good as separate tools?

For the two heads you use most, often yes. For a specific job done frequently, a dedicated tool is usually better.

How many attachments do I actually need?

Most people settle on two. The number in the box is not a measure of how useful the kit is.

Can I use the face head on my body?

It is not designed for it. Face heads are not shaped for curved, sensitive skin, and using them there is the usual cause of nicks.

Are all the heads washable?

Often not. Check each one, because rinsing a head that is not washable is a quick way to end it.

Can I buy replacement heads?

That is the question to ask before buying. Heads are consumables, and a kit without available replacements has an end date.

Is it good for travel?

It is the clearest argument for the format: one case, one charger, several jobs, instead of a bag of separate tools.

How this page is made

The clippers and shavers here come from the catalog of this site. Specifications are the published ones, from the maker and from the Amazon page; prices are the Keepa figure for the date below, and both change. Ranking rests on declared specifications, on stated strengths against stated limits, and on price. Nothing here has been used on hair by us, and the page does not suggest otherwise.
