Braun BG5555 review

The Series 5 adds what the Series 3 lacks: a replaceable shaving head alongside the trimmer, with SkinGuard, an AquaGrip handle for the shower, and a hundred minutes of runtime.

Where it leaves us The tier where a body groomer starts shaving as well as trimming. Price the spare head first.

The Series 5 puts a replaceable shaving head next to the trimmer, which is the difference between trimming body hair and taking it off. SkinGuard covers the whole body, and a removable sensitive comb keeps the blade off the skin where that is wanted.

The handle is Braun’s AquaGrip, on a body stated 100% waterproof, with a Li-ion battery good for a hundred minutes.

Two things to keep in view. Braun’s efficiency claim for the head compares it with “previous models” it does not name — reported here as published. And there is no live offer on amazon.com at the time of writing, so the two body groomers you can price against each other are the $57 Braun and the $94 Philips.

The shelf sorts itself by what each tool can actually take off. This one and the two Philipses shave; the $57 BG3530 only trims. Among the three that shave, this is the only one with a head designed to be replaced rather than resharpened — a running cost stated plainly instead of left to be discovered. The hundred minutes matches the BG5480 and beats the BG3530’s eighty. What the page cannot supply is the figure that would settle the choice, so the comparison a buyer can complete here is still the $57 Braun against the $94 Philips.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • A shaving head as well as a trimmer: the tool does both jobs rather than one
  • The head is replaceable, which means the machine outlives its cutting element
  • A hundred minutes of runtime, twenty more than the Series 3
  • AquaGrip and a 100% waterproof body are both aimed at the same use

Compromises

  • Braun compares the head only with "previous models", without naming them
  • No charge time published

What people ask about this

Why does a replaceable head matter?

Because on every shaving product the cutting element wears out before the motor. A head sold as a spare part means the machine can be brought back to new; a sealed one means the whole tool is the consumable. Braun states this one is replaceable — the price of the spare is not on the product page, and it is worth finding before buying.

What is AquaGrip?

Braun's name for the handle texture, stated to give control under the shower. It is a description of the grip rather than a rating; the water rating itself is stated separately as 100% waterproof.
