Philips BG5480/15 review

A shaving system with pearl-tipped blades, a hypoallergenic foil and a skin guard, plus a folding back attachment for hard-to-reach areas and three bidirectional combs at 2, 3 and 5 mm (0.20 in). Shower-proof, a hundred minutes of use.

Where it leaves us The only tool here that addresses the back, with three lengths and a real shaving foil.

Philips builds this around a three-part protection system: pearl-tipped blades, a hypoallergenic foil and a skin guard, with a diamond-shaped foil for the shave itself.

The part that has no equivalent elsewhere in this group is the folding back attachment — a handle with several positions, intended to reach the areas a hand-held groomer cannot. Alongside it, three bidirectional combs at 2, 3 and 5 mm (0.20 in), so a pass cuts in either direction.

The body is stated 100% shower-proof for wet or dry use, with a hundred minutes of runtime. As on several Philips products here, the contents list ends with “and more” and no charge time is given, so those fields stay as the listing leaves them.

Against the shelf, this is the groomer that covers the most jobs at a price you can read. The $57 Braun trims and does not shave. The Series 5 shaves but has nothing listed on amazon.com. The BG7025 reaches 11 mm (0.43 in) and is not listed either, and publishes no runtime at all. That leaves this page as the only one of the four stating a foil, a comb set, a hundred minutes and a figure to pay at the same time — and the folding back attachment appears on none of the other three. Three fixed combs at 2, 3 and 5 mm (0.20 in) is the ceiling: for a length above five millimeters the only groomer here is the one that cannot be ordered. The four are the Braun BG3530, the Braun BG5555, the Philips BG7025 and this one; the body groomer guide ranks them, and all are on the body groomers shelf.

What people ask about this

What does a bidirectional comb change?

It trims whether you push or pull, so a pass in either direction cuts. On a body where hair grows in several directions, that is the difference between one pass and three.

Does the back attachment actually work alone?

Philips describes a folding handle with several settings, designed for reaching the whole body from any angle. That is what the manufacturer states about the design; how well it suits any particular reach is not something a specification settles, and this page will not pretend otherwise.
