Braun BT5525 review

Forty length settings in precise 0.5 mm (0.02 in) steps on a precision wheel with a lock button, on a trimmer Braun states is 100% waterproof, with up to 120 minutes of cordless use.

Where it leaves us A locking wheel that holds the length, and a waterproof body for the shower.

Forty lengths in 0.5 mm steps, on a precision wheel that locks. Braun’s own description puts the lock first, and it is the right order: on a wheel this fine, a setting that shifts under your thumb costs more than a coarse trimmer would.

The body is described as 100% waterproof with a Li-ion battery good for up to 120 minutes of cordless use. Braun does not publish a charge time for this model, so that field is left empty here.

Trimming, contouring and detailing attachments are listed as supplied. One oddity worth noting for anyone matching references: the part number Amazon carries for this product is a barcode, not a model code — the BT5525 designation comes from the listing title.

Where half-millimeter steps place this trimmer deserves a sentence, because the four beard trimmers here divide the range very differently. The BT9545 halves the increment to 0.25 mm (0.01 in). The Remington MB5000 opens its steps to 2 mm (0.08 in) at the long end. And the Philips OneBlade has no wheel at all — three fixed combs, at 1, 3 and 5 mm (0.20 in), with nothing in between. Forty settings at half a millimeter is the second-finest division on this shelf, and the finest that can actually be ordered: the BT9545 has nothing listed on amazon.com.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • A lock button on the wheel: the setting cannot drift mid-pass, which is the failure that produces an uneven beard
  • Braun states the trimmer is 100% waterproof, not merely water-resistant — a stronger and more specific claim
  • 120 minutes of cordless runtime, double the Remington in this group
  • Forty settings at a constant 0.5 mm (0.02 in) step across the whole range

Compromises

  • Braun does not publish a charge time for this model in its feature list
  • The part number on the listing is a barcode rather than a model code, so the model name comes from the title

What people ask about this

What does the lock button do?

It fixes the precision wheel so the length cannot be knocked to another setting while you trim. On a wheel with forty positions half a millimeter apart, that is not a luxury: a setting that moves by two clicks in the middle of a pass leaves a step you then have to chase across the whole beard.

Is "100% waterproof" the same as an IP rating?

No. It is Braun's own wording, quoted here as such, and it is a stronger claim than "water-resistant". An IP rating is a standardized figure; this is a manufacturer statement. Both are reported on this site the way the maker publishes them, and neither is interpreted here.
