Remington MB5000 review

Seventeen lengths between 0.4 and 18 mm (0.71 in) on a zoom wheel, in 0.5 mm steps at the short end, on titanium-coated self-sharpening blades. Sixty minutes cordless, two hours to charge, washable blades and a travel pouch.

Where it leaves us The cheapest way to hold an exact stubble length, and it charges slowly. Both are true.

Seventeen lengths between 0.4 and 18 mm (0.71 in), set on a zoom wheel, in steps of 0.5 mm (0.02 in) to 2 mm (0.08 in) depending on where you are in the range. That is the specification that separates this from a trimmer with four combs, and it is the reason it appears in this group.

Remington describes the blades as titanium-coated and self-sharpening, and states that they are removable and washable. Sixty minutes of cordless runtime against a two-hour charge, and the trimmer also runs plugged in, so a flat battery does not end the session.

A travel pouch is included. It is one of only two beard trimmers on this site with a live offer on amazon.com, at $55; the other is the Philips OneBlade at $95, and both Brauns publish nothing.

Two figures put this trimmer where it sits. The steps widen to 2 mm (0.08 in) at the long end, where both Brauns hold 0.5 and 0.25 mm (0.01 in) the whole way — so this is the coarsest wheel of the four. Against that, it is the only one here that runs from the mains as well as the battery, and the only one that publishes a charge time at all: two hours, for sixty minutes of use. The Brauns state 120 and 180 minutes of runtime and no charge time; the OneBlade states neither figure. Sixty minutes is the shortest on the shelf, and the only one you can plan around. The Braun BT5525, Braun BT9545 and Philips OneBlade QP2824 share the beard trimmers shelf; what a lock wheel is for explains what this one does without, and how to clean a beard trimmer covers the removable blades.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • Steps of 0.5 mm (0.02 in) at the short end, which is the part of the range a stubble is actually held in
  • Removable washable blades that come out for cleaning
  • Runs plugged in as well as on battery

Compromises

  • Two hours to charge for 60 minutes of use is the slowest ratio of the tools here that publish both figures

What people ask about this

Why do the steps matter more than the range?

A trimmer advertised as 0.4–18 mm (0.02 to 0.71 in) can offer four settings in that span or seventeen. This one steps by 0.5 mm (0.02 in) at the short end, which is where a designer stubble lives — the difference between 1.5 mm (0.06 in) and 2 mm (0.08 in) is visible, and a trimmer that cannot make it holds a different beard from the one you wanted.

Can the blades go under a tap?

Remington states the blades are removable and washable, and describes the design as easy to clean. That is a claim about the blades, not about the body of the trimmer. The manual for your unit says which parts may be rinsed.
