Dyson Airwrap Origin review

The entry Airwrap: the Coanda effect driven by Dyson's V9 digital motor at 110,000 rpm and 3.2 kPa, with airflow temperature measured more than forty times a second, three intelligent attachments, three speeds and three temperatures.

Where it leaves us The best-documented of the four air stylers here, with the fewest attachments in its own family.

Dyson publishes what almost nobody else does: the motor is the V9 digital, a thirteen-blade impeller turning at up to 110,000 rpm, producing 3.2 kPa — which the company states is the pressure needed to produce the Coanda effect that wraps hair around the barrel.

The airflow temperature is measured more than forty times a second and the heating element controlled from that reading. Three airflow speeds and three temperatures are set separately, and the cold shot cuts the element immediately rather than fading it.

Three attachments come in the box, which is fewer than the Beurer or the Shark in this group. That is the trade at this tier, and it is visible before ordering.

One figure Dyson does not give: the temperature in degrees. Three settings, no numbers.

Which leaves an odd result on this shelf. Dyson publishes what nobody else here does — a named motor, an rpm figure, a pressure in kilopascals — and withholds the one figure every cheap competitor gives. The five American air stylers published here, from $47 to $110, all list their settings in °F and an airflow of 28 m (92 ft)/s. This page gives three settings and no numbers, and no price either, since the reference has nothing listed on amazon.com. The engineering is documented further than anyone’s on the shelf; the styling figures are documented less.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • The most completely specified of the four air stylers here: motor speed, pressure, blade count and sampling rate are all published
  • A cold shot that cuts the heating element immediately, stated as such
  • Three speeds and three temperatures, both on separate controls

Compromises

  • Three attachments against five on the Beurer and six on the Shark
  • Dyson publishes no temperature in degrees, only three settings
  • No live offer on amazon.com at the time of writing
  • No price is published for this reference, so its position against the $47 to $110 air stylers on this shelf cannot be read

What people ask about this

What do 110,000 rpm and 3.2 kPa mean?

The first is the speed of the V9 motor's thirteen-blade impeller; the second is the air pressure it produces. Dyson states that pressure is what makes the Coanda effect work — the airflow that pulls hair onto the barrel rather than a hand wrapping it. It is the rare case of a maker publishing the figure behind the mechanism.

Is the Origin the same as the more expensive Airwrap?

Not on the published specifications. The Origin lists three attachments and three settings of each kind; the i.d. in this group adds app control and a saved styling profile. Both are built on the same Coanda principle, and Dyson does not publish a motor figure for the i.d. at all.
