How do I trim a long beard?

With a hair clipper and its long guards, with scissors, or clipper-over-comb — because the beard trimmers and kits here stop between 12 and 21 mm, and a comb cannot set a length longer than it is.

Check the top of your trimmer’s range first. On this site they run to 18 mm (0.71 in) and 21 mm (0.83 in); a beard longer than that cannot be trimmed to length with a comb.

Three ways forward, and the first is the one most people overlook.

A hair clipper reaches further than any trimmer here. The Remington HC5811 covers 3 to 40 mm on ten guards — up to an inch and a half — and the Philips HC5630 covers 0.5 to 28 mm on a wheel. Either will set a beard to a length no beard trimmer on this site can reach, with the same comb-on-the-machine precision.

Scissors, cutting across a comb held in the beard, which is how length is normally shaped and the only method that thins as well as shortens. The cutting scissors shelf starts at $7.

Or clipper over comb, which sets the length by how far the comb is held out and is therefore unlimited.

For a long beard the neckline and cheek lines still get done with the trimmer, guards off. Those are outlines rather than lengths.

One practical note: a long beard is combed before trimming and again between passes, because the hairs sit in several directions and a single comb-through does not reveal the shape.
