Philips MG3946/15 review

Nine attachments covering beard, hair, nose and ear hair and body, with twelve lengths from 0.5 to 12 mm (0.02 to 0.47 in), an intimate comb that shields the skin, and blades Philips states never need oiling.

Where it leaves us The cheapest multigroomer here, with no oiling and a 0.5 mm (0.02 in) start for stubble.

Nine attachments across four jobs: beard, hair, nose and ear hair, body. Twelve lengths from 0.5 to 12 mm (0.02 to 0.47 in), plus an adjustable comb that sweeps 3 to 7 mm (0.12 to 0.28 in) without a change of head.

Two specifications stand out. The blades are described by Philips as self-sharpening, skin-friendly and requiring no oil — which, if you compare it with the Panasonic ER-DGP84, which must be oiled, is a genuinely different maintenance model rather than marketing. And the body kit includes an intimate comb designed to keep the blade off the skin in sensitive areas, an attachment the other three kits here do not mention.

Ninety minutes of runtime, charged over USB-A. As with the OneBlade, there is a cable in the box and no plug.

Set against the shelf, the figures are blunt in this kit’s favor. At $59 it is the cheapest of the four multigroomers here, and it still reaches 0.5 mm (0.02 in) — shorter than Braun’s $100 entry kit, which stops at 3 mm (0.12 in), and matched at the short end only by the MG7962 at $125. Its ninety minutes beat that same Braun’s fifty. What it does not reach is bare skin: for 0.1 mm (0.004 in) the only kit on this shelf is the AIO7565 at $165, nearly three times the price. The absent wall adapter is the real catch, and it is worth naming on a kit chosen for being uncomplicated. The other three are the Braun AIO3545, the Philips MG7962 and the Braun AIO7565, all on the multigroomers shelf; what length is a 3-day stubble places the 0.5 mm start.

The good points, and the rest

Strengths

  • Starts at 0.5 mm (0.02 in), so it holds a stubble as well as trimming a beard
  • A nose and ear trimmer attachment is included, so a separate nose trimmer is not needed
  • Philips states the blades never need oiling, which removes a maintenance step entirely
  • An adjustable comb covers 3 to 7 mm (0.12 to 0.28 in) without swapping anything

Compromises

  • No wall adapter in the box, only USB-A charging
  • Philips does not publish a charge time for this model

What people ask about this

Blades that never need oiling — is that credible?

It is Philips's own statement for this range, quoted as such: it describes the blade technology as self-sharpening, skin-friendly and requiring no oil. Other manufacturers in this same lot state the opposite for their own machines. Follow the instruction that came with the tool you own.

Is the nose trimmer attachment as good as a dedicated one?

The listing does not compare them and neither will this page. What is worth knowing is practical: eleven of the twelve dedicated nose and ear trimmers on this site publish a live price, so finding one is easy — what the attachment saves you is a second purchase rather than a search.
