The three categories where guessing goes wrong
Shavers. Rotary and foil suit different faces and different routines, and somebody who prefers one usually dislikes the other. If you do not know which they use, this is the wrong gift.
Straighteners. Plate width should match hair length, and the temperature range should be adjustable. A fixed-temperature tool is the maker deciding for a head of hair it has never seen.
Replacement parts. Never guess a head or blade reference. Compatibility is a code pattern, and one digit wrong is a part that does not mount.
The safer choices
An all-in-one kit, where the recipient picks which attachments matter: the Braun AIO7565 and the Philips MG7962 are the fullest here, and their comparison separates them. A curling set with several barrel diameters, such as the Remington CI41MS5 and its five attachments. A hot air brush, if you know their hair length — but check the barrel figure before ordering, because three of the ten brushes here do not publish one, and the three American ones state it in inches where the European ones state millimeters. An inch is 25 mm (0.98 in), so a 1-inch barrel and a 25 mm (0.98 in) barrel are the same brush described twice.
What quietly makes a gift better
A case, a heat mat, a glove for a wand. These are small parts, and they are the cheap end of the catalog: a cutting cape from $5, a hard clipper case at $18.
And check that there is a price at all
Some of the products reviewed here publish no price on amazon.com, and each of those pages says so. If you are buying against a budget, check that the thing has a readable price before you plan around it.

What people ask about this
What is the safest category to give?
An all-in-one kit or a curling set with several attachments, because the recipient chooses which parts to use. The riskiest are shavers, where foil and rotary suit different faces, and straighteners, where plate width should match hair length.
Should I buy the most expensive one?
Not necessarily, and on this catalog the cheaper one sometimes publishes more. The [Arkam straightener](/reviews/straighteners-arkam/) at $29 states twelve heat levels from 250 to 450 °F where the [Remington](/reviews/remington-s8540/) at $70 states nine. The [Braun body groomer](/reviews/braun-bg3530/) at $57 states 80 minutes of runtime where the [$125 kit](/reviews/philips-mg7962/) states nothing about its battery at all.
