Clipper, trimmer or shaver — which do you need?

The three families overlap in the shop and not in the hand: the blades are ground differently and the guards are shaped for different surfaces.

The clipper

Wide blade, guards from an eighth of an inch upward, built to move fast across a scalp. It is the tool for head hair and for nothing else in particular. Hair clippers here start at the Philips HC7650 at $90 and run to a professional Panasonic at $200.

The beard trimmer

Narrower blade, a range that starts below one millimeter, and steps fine enough to hold a stubble at an exact length. The specification that matters is the step size between one and three millimeters — under an eighth of an inch, the band a designer stubble lives in, and the thing most listings never quantify. See beard trimmers, and how to hold a stubble for the counts.

The shaver

No guard at all: a foil or a set of rotary heads cutting at skin level. It does not trim and it is not meant to. Rotary suits a neck that grows in several directions; foil suits a face shaved daily. Both families carry a scheduled part, which is the running cost worth checking first — the heads on this site are $25 to $34.

The body groomer

Rounded teeth and a guarded head, for skin that is not flat. This is the one substitution people try and regret, because the blade — not the comb — is what differs. The Braun BG3530 at $57 is the plainest example on the body groomers shelf: two comb lengths, no foil head, and it does not pretend to shave.

Where one tool covers two jobs

An all-in-one kit covers beard, body and often head hair from one motor, and all four here publish a price — $59 to $165. A OneBlade-type tool trims with a comb and shaves without one.

Both are genuine answers if the ranges suit you. The check is the same in each case: where does the range begin. A kit that starts at 3 mm (0.12 in) cannot hold a stubble, whatever else is in the box.

What people ask about this

Can a beard trimmer cut head hair?

Badly, and slowly. The blade is narrower and the guards are shaped for a face. It works in an emergency; it is not the tool. For a full head you want a [hair clipper](/hair-clippers/), whose blade is two or three times the width.

Can I use a clipper on my body?

A [body groomer](/body-groomers/) has rounded teeth and a guarded head because it is designed for skin that is not flat. A clipper does not, and fitting a different comb does not change the blade.

Is one tool ever enough?

For one job, yes. For two jobs, an [all-in-one kit](/multigroomers/) shares a motor across heads, and the Philips [OneBlade](/reviews/philips-qp2824/) at $95 trims with a comb and shaves without one. Neither replaces a proper clipper on a full head — check where each range begins and ends before deciding it covers you.
