Can a beard trimmer shave completely clean?

Not usually — with the comb off, most trimmers leave a very short stubble rather than bare skin, and only a few tools state a length approaching zero.

A trimmer blade sits a fraction above the skin by design, because the guard geometry protects it. Removing the comb removes the length setting, not that clearance.

Six exceptions on this site, and they work in two different ways.

Four publish a shaving head or foil, which is a separate attachment rather than a shorter setting: the Braun BT9545 supplies one it calls PrecisionShave, the Braun BG5555 a replaceable shaving head, and the Philips BG5480 and BG7025 a hypoallergenic foil. A foil or a shaving head cuts at skin level because that is what it is for.

Two get there by length instead. The Braun AIO7565 states 0.1 mm with its precision head, which is effectively bare skin. The Philips OneBlade used with no comb shaves rather than trims, because the cutting element is built for it.

What the distinction buys you is predictability: a tool with a shaving head is shaving by design, and a tool reaching 0.1 mm (0.004 in) is trimming very short. The second depends more on how you hold it.

For anything else, clean shaving is a shaver’s job — foil or rotary — and the pop-up trimmer on those handles the edges.

If a listing does not state a minimum length, that figure is not published, and our pages leave it empty rather than assuming zero.
